Kristin Dawn Chenoweth was born in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma on July 24, 1968. When she was five days old, she was taken in by chemical engineers Junie Smith Chenoweth and Jerry Morris Chenoweth.
She claimed to be half Cherokee. She met her biological mother as an adult. Her biological mother’s uncle had watched Chenoweth on a late-night talk show 10 years before and commented on how similar they looked.
When she was younger, she enjoyed singing and performing on stage, and she used to sing gospel songs at local churches. When she was twelve, she sang the Evie song “Four Feet Eleven” before the Southern Baptist Convention.
She attended Broken Arrow High School and was interested in the theatrical program.
After graduating, she attended Oklahoma City Institution, a tiny private Christian college. She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and participated in beauty pageants, earning the title of Miss Oklahoma City University.
She received her bachelor’s degree in musical theater in 1990, but she continued her education to get her master’s degree.
She was Miss Oklahoma’s second runner-up in 1991, and she earned her master’s degree in opera performance in 1992.
