The youth of Krobo in the Eastern region of Ghana have expressed their displeasure with Ghanaian rapper, Sarkodie for labeling their women with an uncouth word in one of his latest featured song. An uproar which is allegedly instigated by Kwame Dadzie, music critic & writer at citifmonline.com.
For the purpose of clarity, let me summarize the incident leading to the recent happenings between Sarkodie and the Krobo’s for you.
Ghana’s most decorated rapper of all time, Sarkodie, recently got featured on a certain up and coming artiste called Kurl Songx latest hit track titled: “Jenifer Lomotey”. And just as we know Sarkodie’s rap dexterity and word play, getting to the later part of his rap, he referred to the lady in question, Jenifer Lomotey as a promiscuous (Adwaman) lady from Krobo who has been cursed by famous traditional priest Okomfo Anokye.
Truly, most Ghanaians have heard about the myth which states that famous traditional priest, Okomfo Anokye cursed Krobo women for staring at his manhood when he passed through their land somewhere in the 1600 (15th Century) according to our history books.
As a result, the youth of Krobo have not taken that part of Sarkodie’s rap kindly. According to them, it’s an insult for an astute musician in the person of Sarkodie to use an unsubstantiated myth to ridicule the women from their tribe lyrically.
Speaking to the press, the youth of Krobo said:
“We expected an artist of such international stature like Sarkodie to know better and not to play games with such sensitive issues”.
“Every tribe may have a myth, but his attempt to commercialize the so-called myth at our expense to make financial gains and profit for himself is where we have the problem. This is deliberate. This is calculated. This is unacceptable in this 21st century,” they said.
They youth went on to warn Sarkodie they will end his career if he doesn’t take steps to withdraw and apologize for demeaning their women. They further stated they have outlined measures they will use to deal with the internationally acclaimed Ghanaian rapper if he fails to honor their request.
“We want Sarkodie and his team to know that they will regret making a mockery of us. We have lined up a number of actions to deal ruthlessly with them. We are adopting a number of measures to seek redress.”
Even before the youth of Krobo came out with their statement, a campaign had already started on social media with the #SarkMustApologize to put pressure on the rapper to do the right thing and withdraw the statement alleging Okomfo Anokye has cursed the women in Krobo with promiscuity
