Who is Lee Jae-Myung?

Lee Jae-myung, born December 22, 1964, is a South Korean politician who presently serves as the head of the Democratic Party of Korea and is a member of the National Assembly. With a remarkable path that began in humble origins in Andong, he overcame hardship and went on to work in a factory after finishing primary school. Unfortunately, his life was turned upside down when job injuries rendered him incapacitated.

Despite these hurdles, Lee displayed tenacity and perseverance by acquiring middle and high school equivalency degrees. His study proceeded at Chung-Ang University, where he graduated with a law degree in 1986.

This academic achievement was a watershed moment in his life, leading him to a career in human rights and labour advocacy.

Lee, a dedicated human rights and labour lawyer, worked closely with Minbyun, a famous human rights organisation, and was instrumental in campaigning for the building of a new hospital in Seongnam. Throughout his career, his commitment to social justice and improving the lives of others has been a recurring theme.

When Lee Jae-myung was appointed the 35th Governor of Gyeonggi Province, he elevated his political career to unprecedented heights. He held the office from 2018 to 2021. Throughout his term, he made an attempt to resolve local problems and advance the province’s general growth.

Lee was the Democratic Party’s nominee in the 2022 South Korean presidential election, demonstrating the respect and backing he received from the political community. His stature and influence within the party are demonstrated by this nomination, underscoring his capacity to lead the country.

Lee Jae-Myung’s Early Life and family Background

Lee Jae-Myung was born in Andong on December 22, 1964, the fifth of seven children. According to his first-grade report card, he had an adventurous attitude, average academic achievement, and stubbornness throughout his early years. He had to cross a stream on wet or snowy days and go a distance of 5 km (3.1 mi) to get to school, yet in spite of these difficulties, he was kind and brave among his peers.

Having come from a low-income family, Lee knew what it was like to grow up in poverty. Later, the family moved to the industrially planned city of Seongnam, where he worked for a while in a factory that produced handcrafted necklaces before moving on to work for Dongma Rubber. Regretfully, a finger injury sustained while working at Dongma Rubber was only the start of a string of mishaps at work.
