Lighthouse Chapel: Former pastor arraigned for allegedly stealing church’s car

Emmanuel Oko Mensah, a former Bishop of the Lighthouse Chapel International (LCI), has been charged at an Accra Circuit for allegedly stealing the Church’s Hyundai Elantra saloon car.

The former Bishop appeared before the court today (September 22, 2021), presided over by Ms Evelyn Asamoah, and pleaded not guilty to the charge. He has since been granted bail in the sum of GH 150,000 with two sureties.

Oko Mensah is one of six pastors who have filed a lawsuit against the LCI for unpaid Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions.

According to the Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Simon Apiosornu, who handled the case for Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Emmanuel Nyamekye, the former Bishop of the LCI failed to return the official car, valued at $20,000, to the Church after his resignation, and the car has since been impounded by the police.

Kofi Bentil, Oko Mensah’s counsel, argued in his bail application that his client was not a flight risk and had a fixed place of abode.

He also stated that his client has his church where he ministers to his congregation every Sunday and that he is requesting self-recognizance bail from the court.

Counsel also informed the court that his client had filed a civil action against the Church and that he would be available to stand trial until the case was resolved.

“He will not do anything to jeopardize his liberty,” Counsel told the court.

The accused was also granted bail and ordered to return to court on October 12 of this year, according to the presiding judge.
