Austin was born on August 8, 1953, in Mobile, Alabama, to James Austin Jr., a postal worker, and Aletia Taylor Austin. He pursued his higher education at the esteemed United States Military Academy at West Point, where he actively participated in track and rugby, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1975.
Subsequently, Austin enrolled in Auburn University’s esteemed faculty of education, where he further honed his skills and knowledge in counsellor education, culminating in the attainment of a Master of Arts degree in 1986. In 1989, he successfully completed his Master of Business Administration in business management from Webster University. Austin was nominated by President Obama in late 2012 and was given the position of Commander of CENTCOM on March 22, 2013.
