In the 2002–03 season, Pierce began his coaching career by volunteering for the job of director of basketball operations at Santa Clara.

He worked for Dick Davey up until 2007.

He would advance to the finals for the Santa Clara University Broncos head coaching position in 2016.

Since the beginning of his coaching career, Lloyd Pierce teams coached include; the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks, and, as of the writing of this article, Indiana Pacers.

From 2007 through 2010, Pierce worked for the Cleveland Cavaliers as the player development coordinator.

During the 2010–11 season, he worked as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors under head coach Keith Smart.

In 2011, Lloyd Pierce took over as the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, reporting to Lionel Hollins. He was also on the team responsible for player development.

Just before the 2013–14 season, Pierce signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.
