As a freshman in 1990, Pierce joined Yerba Buena High School’s varsity team. He was regarded as one of the best players from the San Jose area ever and he adored playing defence.

His basketball scholarship at Santa Clara University was for the whole amount.

The Santa Clara Broncos made the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament three times in four years, from 1993 to 1996, with future NBA stars Steve Nash and Marlon Garnett.

In his freshman and sophomore years, respectively, in 1995 and 1996, Pierce assisted in leading the Broncos to the NCAA playoffs, where they made it as far as the second round in 1996.
