Donahue was born on December 21, 1935, in Cleveland, Ohio, into a middle-class, religious Irish Catholic family. His mother, Catherine (McClory), worked as a shoe clerk in a department store and his father, Phillip Donahue, sold furniture.

He received his education from Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood’s Our Lady of the Angels elementary school in 1949.

Phil Donahue was a member of the first graduating class of St. Edward High School, an all-boys Catholic private high school that served as a college prep program in suburban Lakewood, Ohio, and was run by the Congregation of Holy Cross.

He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame, which is likewise run by the Congregation of Holy Cross, in 1957.

Marge Cooney ex-husband, Phil Donahue started his career as a production assistant at KYW radio and television in Cleveland. When the scheduled announcer failed to appear one day, he was given the opportunity to fill in.

Soon after graduating, he started working as a bank check sorter in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before taking a job as the program director for WABJ radio in Adrian, Michigan.
