Who is Stamen Grigorov?

The physician and microbiologist, Dr. Stamen Grigorov was born on October 27th, 1878, and was the first scientist to discover the bacterium essential to yogurt fermentation.

He has become a momentum because he also contributed to the development of the world’s first tuberculosis vaccine.

Stamen Grigorov was in the village of Studen Izvor in the Trun region of western Bulgaria. Since his childhood, he was passionate about science at a young age hence he proceed to get a doctorate from the Medical University of Geneva, Switzerland.

He became a research assistant at the university after his wedding in 1904.

Why did Google Doodle celebrate Stamen Grigorov?

When Stamen Grigorov was working at the university his wife sent him some Bulgarian culinary staples which yogurt was included.

He got excited about the reputed health benefits of yogurt so he decided to inspect it under a microscope. After several experiments, he finally found what he was searching for in 1905 which is, the rod-shaped microorganism that causes yogurt’s fermentation.

However, the bacterium was later renamed Lactobacillus bulgaricus in honour of Grigorov’s home country. He later took a position as chief at a local hospital in his hometown of Trun.

Stamen Grigorov released a groundbreaking paper in 1906 demonstrating the first use of penicillin fungi against tuberculosis.

Through out the rest of her life, he continued to research and worked as a doctor and saved numerous lives.
