Bud Grant, also known as Harry Peter Grant Jr., was a multi-sport star who played basketball in the National Basketball Association and professional football in both the United States and Canada.

Grant had a successful coaching career in American football in addition to his playing career. Bud Grant was born in Superior, Wisconsin, on May 20, 1927.

At the University of Minnesota, where he played college football, he was a three-sport star who excelled in baseball, basketball, and football.

Both the Philadelphia Eagles and the NBA’s Minneapolis Lakers selected Grant in the post-college draft.

He decided to pursue a career in football and signed with the Eagles in 1950. Before being traded to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 1953, Grant spent two seasons playing for the Eagles.

As a receiver and defensive end who also played both offense and defense in the CFL, Grant quickly rose to prominence. Throughout his ten-year career in the league, he was named an All-Star seven times and won four Grey Cups with the Blue Bombers.

Grant transitioned from playing to coaching following his retirement, beginning as an assistant with the Blue Bombers before being appointed as the Minnesota Vikings’ head coach in 1967.

He coached the team for 18 seasons, leading them to four Super Bowl appearances and 11 division titles.

Grant retired from coaching in 1985 but remained involved in football as a commentator and analyst.
