Son of Agustin Tejada and Raquel Urquizo, her father Armando Tejada was an aviation engineer from La Paz, Bolivia. In 2010, Welch said, “My father comes from a place called Bolivia,” in an interview with Tavis Smiley.

He had Spanish ancestry. Lidia Gueiler Tejada, a politician in Bolivia, is her cousin and the continent’s second female head of state who is not a monarch.
