Meet Sylvia, The American Lady Who Relocated To Africa And Started Street Hawking

An American woman who went viral after being spotted hawking on the streets of Kenya has shared her experience after relocating to the Eastern African nation.

The woman identified as Sylvia Bichanga is said to have married a Kenyan man, Kelvin Opanga in an interview with Tuko about her relationship and her experience as a hawker on the streets of Kisumu, Kenya.

She disclosed that the snacks she sells are largely welcomed in the lakeside city as her customers love her food stall because of the unique American food she prepares.

In her words, “I don’t make chapatis or mandazis, so the food is unique, and many people have never tasted it before.

“My pizza pocket goes the best among the younger generations, while the tea is a big hit among matatu drivers and conductors,”

She noted that people finds it curious to a lady like her on the streets hawking.

“Most people are very curious of what I am selling and are quite excited about trying out the food”

Sylvia disclosed that she grew up in Ohio, US but relocated to Kenya with her family through Conservative Christian Mission and has no plans of getting a man to settle down with.

Speaking on how she met her husband, she revealed that robbers stormed their house in Kisumu and made away their electronics hence she followed her father to an electronic shop and that was where Kelvin, her husband worked.

“I could not believe my eyes when I saw him. My spirit left my body. My hands were trembling, I had never seen such a handsome man in my life. That is where I went down a difficult road,”

According to her, they eventually got married as she waded into the challenges of being a cross cultural marriage is, ” Having been raised in different cultures it takes more communication than a normal marriage would.”
