Gordon was a two-sport star for the Red Devils in both football and track at Mary D. Bradford High School, where he was born and reared in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

In football, he amassed 1,098 yards and 11 touchdowns on 99 carries in addition to five receiving touchdowns. As a junior, the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA) named him to its All-state and All-region honourable mention lists. He ran for 2,009 yards and 38 touchdowns as a senior, earning first-team All-state honours from the WFCA and the Associated Press.

He won the Gatorade Football Player of the Year award in Wisconsin. Trae Waynes, a cornerback selected by the Minnesota Vikings four picks before Gordon in the 2015 NFL Draft, has played in the same club as Gordon.

Gordon was a standout in the long jump and a top performer for the state in the sport. He set a personal record in the 55-meter dash at the 2011 Racine Invitational, finishing first in 6.39 seconds.

At the 2011 SEC Outdoor Conference, he finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.95 seconds, a career-best. He recorded a career-best leap of 7.20 meters to win silver in the long jump at the 2011 WIAA Track & Field State Championships (23 ft 7 in).
