Michael Oher bio
Michael Oher was born in Memphis, Tennessee, as one of twelve children to Denise Oher. Unfortunately, his mother struggled with alcoholism and crack cocaine addiction, while his father, Michael Jerome Williams, was frequently incarcerated.
As a result, Oher received little attention or discipline during his childhood, repeating first and second grades and attending eleven schools during his first nine years as a student. At the age of seven, he was placed in foster care and experienced periods of homelessness.
Tragically, Oher’s father was murdered in prison when Oher was a senior in high school. Despite these challenges, Oher discovered a passion for football during his freshman year at a public high school in Memphis. At the suggestion of Tony Henderson, an auto mechanic with whom he was living temporarily, Oher applied for admission to Briarcrest Christian School. The school’s football coach, Hugh Freeze, submitted Oher’s application to the headmaster, who agreed to accept him if Oher could complete a home study program first.
Although he did not finish the program, the headmaster recognized that his requirement had removed Oher from the public education system and admitted him to the school. Under the guidance of Freeze and Tim Long, Briarcrest’s offensive line coach, Oher excelled on the football field, earning Division II (2A) Lineman of the Year and First-team Tennessee All-State honours in 2003.
Scout.com rated Oher a five-star recruit and the No. 5 offensive lineman prospect in the country. During this time, Oher lived with several foster families before Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy, a couple with children attending Briarcrest, allowed him to live with them in 2004.
However, in 2023, Oher alleged that the Tuohys tricked him into signing a document making them conservators while telling him it was the same as adoption. Oher continued his football career at the University of Mississippi, where he earned unanimous All-American honors and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
What happned to Michael Oher?
On Friday, Shelby County Probate Court Judge Kathleen Gomes announced the termination of the conservatorship agreement between former NFL player Michael Oher and the Memphis couple, Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, who took him in during his high school years.
The agreement, which granted the Tuohys control over Oher’s finances, was signed by Oher when he was 18 and living with the couple as he was being recruited by colleges for his football talent. Judge Gomes expressed her concern over the agreement, stating that she had never seen such an arrangement made with someone who was not disabled in her 43-year career.
While the judge terminated the agreement, she did not dismiss the case entirely. Oher has requested a financial accounting from the Tuohys, alleging that they used his name, image, and likeness to enrich themselves and misled him into believing that the agreement meant they were adopting him. Recently, the former NFL star filed a petition in his home state of Tennessee to terminate the conservatorship initiated by the wealthy Tuohy family in 2004.
