Michael Slater Biography
Slater was born in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, and spent his early years in Wagga and Junee. His parents, Peter and Carole, and his two older siblings migrated from the northeastern coast of England to Launceston, Tasmania, in 1966, where his father taught high school agriculture and science. After three years, they moved to Wagga Wagga, where his father became a teacher in agriculture at the Agricultural College.
When Slater was 12 years old, his mother left the family, which was a tough time for him. He struggled with his academics, and his academic standards slipped after his mother’s departure. Slater later revealed that he suffers from manic depression, which made it even more difficult for him to cope with his mother’s departure. He turned to sports as the only thing he could focus on and something that he had been involved in from an early age.
Slater’s family was always involved in sports, so he played any game that was on offer. He excelled in cricket and hockey and was selected for various state and national teams. Slater underwent surgery for an Achilles tendon injury when he was 17, which he thought would end his cricketing dreams. However, he returned to cricket and went on to play for the New South Wales Blues in Australian domestic cricket and Derbyshire in English county cricket. Slater played test cricket, opening the batting and scoring 5,312 runs and 14 centuries at an average of 42. Although he was not successful in One Day International games, averaging a lowly 24.07, he achieved many great things on the cricket field.
Slater’s cricketing career took a downturn when he was dropped from the Australian side in late 1996 after a poor performance. Although he returned to the national team after two years, he faced several challenges, including splitting from his wife and being accused of taking drugs by the Australian Cricket Board (ACB). Slater’s Ashes tour to England in 2001 was his last series.
In November 2022, Slater was found guilty of several charges, including domestic violence, harassment via a carriage service, stalking or intimidation, and common assault, in the Manly Local Court. Although he had two counts of common assault and one of attempting to stalk or intimidate dismissed due to mental health reasons in relation to an incident at a northern beaches hospital in July. The magistrate stated that the convictions were “expected by the community” and that repeated domestic violence offences should not go unpunished. As a result, Slater received a two-year prison sentence to be served within the community.
In 2023, Slater was taken into custody and charged with assaulting a police officer and obstructing police twice following a confrontation that occurred in Noosa Heads.
