Michaela Coel Biography
Coel was born to her Ghanaian parents in East London on 1 October 1987. She grew up in Hackney and Tower Hamlets. After her early schooling in Catholic schools in East London, she attended the University of Birmingham where she studied English Literature and Theology. She also took a Ché Walker masterclass after meeting Walker at open mic nights and in 2009, was transferred to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she graduated in 2012.

Coel started performing at poetry open mics in 2006. With much encouragement from playwright and director Ché Walker, she applied to Guildhall.
