He founded the band Hocus in 1971, releasing five singles and one album. Due to Colin Viljoen, a player for Ipswich Town who was born in South Africa, Lange was connected to the team and wrote and produced the FA Cup final song “Ipswich Get That Goal” in 1978. The song is a remake of Paul Jones’ 1977 song “Give That Thang To Me,” with new lyrics and some elements changed.

His first significant hits as a producer came in October 1978 with The Boomtown Rats’ UK No. 1 single “Rat Trap,” and in July 1979 with AC/hard DC’s rock album Highway to Hell (#8 UK, No. 17 US). He started producing in 1976. From 1976 through 1979, he worked on five albums with the British band City Boy.

While still married, Lange started a five-year relationship with Oonagh O’Reilly, an Irish-born co-worker. He then turned his attention to Shania Twain after he heard a couple of her songs.

After flirting with her for some time on the phone, they finally met six months after the initial contact and were married on 28 December 1993. In August 2001, their son Eja (pronounced “Asia”) was born.
