Nathaniel Hackett Biography

Hackett’s coaching career began at the collegiate level, where he honed his skills as an assistant coach for UC Davis and Stanford. However, it was in the NFL that he truly made his mark. His first taste of the professional league came in 2006 when he joined Jon Gruden’s coaching staff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a quality coach. This experience served as a stepping stone for Hackett as he moved on to the Buffalo Bills in the same role for the 2008 and 2009 seasons. During his tenure with the Bills, he had the opportunity to work with several quarterbacks, including Bruce Gradkowski, Chris Simms, Jeff Garcia, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Brian Brohm.

In 2010, Hackett’s talents were recognized by Syracuse, which hired him as their quarterbacks and tight ends coach under head coach Doug Marrone. Hackett’s journey with Marrone didn’t end there, as he followed him to Buffalo and Jacksonville in subsequent years. His dedication and hard work earned him a promotion to offensive coordinator in Syracuse in 2011 and again in Buffalo in 2013.

During his time as the offensive coordinator with the Bills, Hackett faced both successes and challenges. The team boasted a prolific running game led by halfbacks C. J. Spiller and Fred Jackson, but their passing offence struggled to find its rhythm, ranking 29th in the league. Nevertheless, Hackett’s abilities as an offensive mind were evident, and his reputation as a talented coordinator grew.

In 2015, fate brought Hackett to the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he played a significant role in orchestrating the league’s best-rushing attack in 2017. Teaming up with quarterback Blake Bortles and running back Leonard Fournette, Hackett’s offensive strategies guided the Jaguars to an AFC South victory and an appearance in the AFC Championship game.

Despite the successes in Jacksonville, the team’s performance waned in the following year, leading to Hackett’s dismissal in 2018. However, it didn’t take long for his talents to be recognized once again. The Green Bay Packers hired Hackett as their offensive coordinator in January 2019, where he had the privilege of working alongside star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The partnership proved to be highly successful, as the Packers soared to become the league’s best-scoring offence in the 2020 season. Under Hackett’s guidance, Rodgers claimed back-to-back MVP awards in 2020 and 2021.

With these achievements under his belt, Hackett’s coaching journey took an unexpected turn when he was appointed as the head coach of the Denver Broncos in January 2022. The move represented a significant step up for him, but it also exposed him to the intense scrutiny and pressure that come with leading an NFL team.

Unfortunately, Hackett’s tenure as the Broncos head coach was plagued by challenges. Criticisms about his clock management and decision-making in crucial game situations cast a shadow over his leadership. Despite attempts to address the issues with the addition of Jerry Rosburg as an assistant, the Broncos’ poor performance led to Hackett’s firing in December 2022, making him one of the few head coaches not to finish his first season since the AFL-NFL merger.

However, in the world of football, setbacks are often stepping stones to new opportunities. The New York Jets recognized Hackett’s talents and appointed him as their offensive coordinator in January 2023.

Throughout his coaching career, Nathaniel Hackett has experienced the highs of success and the lows of disappointment, but his passion for the game and dedication to his craft remains unwavering. He continues to strive for excellence, eager to leave his mark on the NFL as an influential offensive mind.

Off the field, Hackett’s family has been a source of strength and support. He and his wife, Megan, have four children together, creating a solid foundation for him to face the challenges that come with coaching at the highest level.
