Nicola Sturgeon advanced in the SNP, serving as the party’s deputy leader from 2004 to 2014, before becoming the leader of the party in 2014, succeeding Alex Salmond. In the same year, she also became the First Minister of Scotland, making her the first woman to hold the position.

As First Minister, Sturgeon has led the Scottish government through challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Her handling of the pandemic has been widely praised as more effective than the UK government’s response.

Sturgeon has also been a vocal advocate for Scottish independence, arguing that Scotland should be able to choose its own future without being subject to decisions made by the UK government in Westminster. She led the campaign for Scottish independence during the 2014 independence referendum, which resulted in a “no” vote. However, she has continued to push for a second independence referendum.

Throughout her career, Sturgeon has been a strong advocate for social justice, championing policies aimed at reducing poverty and inequality. She has also been a vocal supporter of LGBT rights and played a crucial role in the passing of the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Act 2014, legalizing same-sex marriage in Scotland.

In 2019, she faced calls to resign over her handling of sexual harassment allegations against her predecessor, Alex Salmond. The Scottish government was found to have acted unlawfully in its handling of the allegations, leading to a parliamentary inquiry and a vote of no confidence in Sturgeon.

On 15 February 2023, Sturgeon announced that she would resign as first minister and Leader of the Scottish National Party once a new leader is elected.
