A passionate soccer fan from Nigeria lost his life while watching the Europa League final between Manchester United of England and Villarreal of Spain on Wednesday, May 26, 2021.
The deceased has been identified as a 200 level Anatomy student of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State whose name is Tomiwa.
According to a source, the deceased wasn’t sick when the incident occurred. “We were in the common room and as Manchester United scored, he screamed.
As people were shouting, he fell and was gasping for air. He isn’t asthmatic so we rushed him to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
The medical personnel didn’t attend to him quickly so he gave up the ghost,” a source said.
Meanwhile, the match ended in a stalemate during 90minutes of regulation time plus 30miutes of extra time. The game proceeded to penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw.
Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli scored the decisive spot-kick and saved his counterpart David de Gea’s attempt as they claimed their first European title by beating Manchester United 11-10 on penalties.
In the first European final to be played in front of a crowd in two years amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Villarreal survived a tough second half to give coach Unai Emery a record fourth title in the competition, leaving United without a trophy since their Europa League triumph in 2017.
