Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, has intimated that citizens of Ghana without Ghana Cards may soon be unable to purchase energy or install electricity meters in their homes.
According to the minister, the law, which has not yet taken effect, is a part of the government’s strategy for expanding the energy industry.
He said: “Very soon, if you don’t have Ghana Card, you wouldn’t get a meter. Regulations are subjected to change and it is all about development”.
“It is the rules set by this country that I follow. It is the rules set by the country which states that, if you need a meter, do this or that”, the Minister explained
The National Identification Authority (NIA) is worried about the new deadline for re-registering SIM cards with the Ghana card, though.
Following a discussion about Hon. Ursula Owusu Akuful’s directive to outlaw SIM cards by the end of September if people don’t link their mobile SIM cards to their National IDs, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh made his thoughts.
