Pat Robertson, a religious broadcaster who helped build the global Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) from a small Virginia station and helped make religion fundamental to Republican Party politics in the United States through his Christian Coalition, has died. He was 93.
His television network revealed Robertson’s death on Thursday.
Robertson’s businesses also included Regent University, an evangelical Christian school in Virginia Beach; the American Center for Law and Justice, which advocates for Christians’ religious freedom; and Operation Blessing, an international humanitarian organization. He also considered running for president.
Robertson was a regular presence in American living rooms for more than a half-century, known for his 700 Club television show and, later, his televised pronouncements of God’s punishment, blaming natural disasters on everything from homosexuality to the teaching of evolution.
Nevertheless, Robertson’s influence grew over time and remained in mainstream conservative politics.
He brought a large following with him when he entered politics directly in 1988, running for the Republican presidential nomination.
Robertson pioneered the now-common technique of targeting Iowa’s network of evangelical Christian churches, finishing second to Vice President George HW Bush in the Iowa caucuses.
According to Robertson’s biographer Jeffrey K Hadden, Robertson’s masterstroke was insisting on three million petition signatures from his followers across the United States before deciding to run. The strategy provided him with an army.
Robertson started the Christian Coalition in Chesapeake, Virginia in 1989, saying it would further his campaign’s ideals. The coalition became a major political force in the 1990s, mobilizing conservative voters through grassroots activities.
Robertson was born on March 22, 1930, in Lexington, Virginia, United States, and died on June 8, 2023, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States.
