Why Did Roy Bryant Kill Emmett Till?

Carolyn and her husband Roy Bryant  owned a Grocery & Meat Market, which is where Emmett allegedly “wolf-whistled” and exchanged words with Carolyn.

It was a sweltering summer day in August 1955 when Emmett, a bit of a troublemaker, walked into the store. Carolyn stated Emmett approached her behind the counter where she was working, grabbed her, made some obscene remarks, and then whistled at her as she walked away.

When Roy Bryant arrived home a few days later, he phoned his half-brother J.W., and the two abducted and murdered Emmett.

Roy and his brother Millam were later taken to court to be judged. Their court day was in September of 1955. They were found not guilty by an all-white jury.

Because of the outcome of the trial, many African-Americans were outraged because of the injustices surrounding the murder case.

Roy Bryant’s Death

Roy Bryant was reported to have passed away on 1st September 1994, in Ruleville, Sunflower County, Mississippi. He was 63 years old when he died.

Reports say he died of colon cancer. His half-brother J. W. Milam, who was involved in the murder case also died on December 30, 1980, at an age of 61, in Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi.
