Barks made her debut in the music industry with the release of her first album, Looking in Your Eyes, in April 2007. The album, which featured several co-written songs, was released on the independent label Brunswick Studios and sold approximately 600 copies. In June of the same year, Barks performed at the Peel Bay Festival, where she supported Matt Willis and the Sugababes.
Later that year, Barks represented the Isle of Man in the Maltese International Song Competition, where she won the main prize of €2000 and the title of Best Foreign Singer. She performed “Nothing Else” from her album and “Play On,” a popular song in Malta.
In 2008, Barks participated in I’d Do Anything, a talent competition in search of a new, unknown lead to play Nancy in a West End revival of the British musical Oliver!. She was one of the finalists and finished third in the competition. During the competition, Tourism Minister Adrian Earnshaw showed his support for Barks by renaming the Isle of Man to the “Isle of Sam” in her honor.
The renaming ceremony was held on 29 April 2008, and signs at Ronaldsway Airport and Douglas Sea Terminal were changed to reflect the new name.
