Samira Bawumia was in India for the International Conference on Women Trafficking in Mumbai, India; hosted by the Maharashtra State Commission for Women and the International Justice Mission. As a result, she used the opportunity to visit some of the cast of the popular Kumkum Bhagya series which is aired on Adom TV.
This move by Ghana’s Second Lady, Samira Bawumia has been under attack on several social media platforms after the posing pictures with the Bollywood movie stars surfaced online in the various social media platforms.
A section of Ghana Movie industry players especially Michael Ola of Kumawood fame and others have criticised Samira for promoting Bollywood movies meanwhile, our own Ghana movie industry keeps sinking each day because of low patronage.
However, in a latest post by the Second lady of the country she indicated that her meeting with the cast and some players in the Indian movie industry was for a future collaboration between Ghana’s movie industry and Bollywood in order to whip up interest in Ghanaian movies.
She posted via Facebook:
“Meeting with some key members of the Indian Entertainment Industry, exploring possibilities of collaboration to boost the budding movie Industry in Ghana”.
The series which has been telecast for over a year has Indian actors and actresses speaking the Akan language (Asante Twi) which has attracted several people to it including illiterates because of the Twi language transcription.
The Second Lady believes with the level of enthusiasm with which Ghanaians watch and anticipate to watch the series, Ghana’s movie industry could leverage on that to make some gains to help boost the industry to a very high level.
