Ghanaian rapper and SarkCess Music frontman, Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie has started an online campaign dubbed #BringBackAzonto in a bid to revisit and bring back the dance and song genre that took over the world a decade ago.
Azonto is a dance and music genre from Ghana. The dance originated from a traditional dance called Kpanlogo, associated with the coastal towns in the country such as Chorkor, James Town, La, Teshie, Nungua and Tema, in the Greater Accra Region. (Wikipedia).
When the popular dance broke out into the Ghanaian media space, a lot of musicians did a song to suit the dance and therefore, a genre was born out of it. It became a global dance after Fuse ODG did a song and titled it Azonto.
The song helped the dance got the global recognition it needed and soon after, it vanished like it never existed.
Well, in a bid to bring back the dance, Sarkodie just released a song titled #Hookime which features Tulenkey. he then tweeted at Ghanaian rapper and songwriter EL who also brought the Azonto tune to live through his beat production; this time to help bring back what Ghanaians has always yelled for.
“Yo @ELgh_ agenda dey Smiling face with smiling eyes we de #BringBackAzonto nti #Fahookime sharp … let’s go!!!”
