Sayfullo Saipov drove a rented pickup truck into cyclists and runners for about one mile (1.6 kilometres) of the Hudson River Park’s bike path alongside West Street from Houston Street south to Chambers Street in Lower Manhattan, New York City, killing eight people, six of whom were foreign tourists, and injured eleven others in the process in 2017.

On February 8, 1988, Saipov was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, which was still a part of the Soviet Union. He spent the majority of his childhood in the Beltepa and Uchtepa neighbourhoods. Saipov was the only son of his parents and the oldest of four children.
He earned his professional college degree in 2005 and, before beginning employment as an accountant, studied at the Tashkent Financial Institute from 2005 to 2009.
Saipov arrived in the country in 2010 using a Diversity Immigrant Permit and now resides there permanently (has a “green card”). Prior to relocating to Paterson, New Jersey, and Tampa, Florida, he lived in Stow, Ohio. He spent six months driving for Uber in New Jersey. Public records show he held a commercial truck license.

Sayfullo Saipov escapes death penalty for life in prison
The sentencing phase for Saipov started on February 14, 2023, with the prosecution requesting the death penalty in his case. The jury was unable to reach a verdict in favour of Saipov receiving the death sentence for any of the charges. Saipov was given a life term without the possibility of parole on March 13, 2023.
