Sebastian Pinera biography

Piñera pursued his higher education at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, earning an undergraduate degree in commercial engineering in 1971. He excelled academically and received the prestigious Raúl Iver Oxley Prize, awarded to the top student in each class.

Following his undergraduate studies, Piñera went on to pursue postgraduate studies in economics at Harvard University through a partial Fulbright Program. During his time at Harvard, he coauthored an article titled “The Old South’s Stake in the Inter-Regional Movement of Slaves” for the Journal of Economic History with a classmate. After three years, Piñera successfully obtained both a Master of Arts and a PhD in Economics from Harvard.

In the year 1988, following Pinochet’s defeat in the referendum and Chile’s transition to democracy, Piñera extended his support to Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, a Christian Democrat, during his pre-candidacy for the presidency.

From March 11th, 1990, to March 11th, 1998, Piñera served as a senator representing Eastern Santiago. In 1998, Piñera voiced his opposition to the arrest and detention of Augusto Pinochet in London, which was initiated by Baltasar Garzón.

He argued that this action infringed upon Chile’s sovereignty and dignity. Surprisingly, on May 14, 2005, Piñera announced his candidacy for the 2005 presidential election, deviating from RN’s expected support for UDI’s Lavín. He characterized his political ideology as Christian humanism.

On February 6, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. Chile Summer Time (UTC−3), a Robinson R44 helicopter (Registration CC-PHP) piloted by Sebastian Pinera crashed into Lake Ranco in the province of El Ranco, Los Rios Region.

The crash occurred shortly after take-off, during a strong storm in the area. Piñera survived the crash itself but was rendered unconscious due to the impact, making it impossible for him to remove his safety belt. Tragically, he drowned as a result.

Fortunately, the other three individuals on board—Piñera’s sister Magdalena, businessman Miguel Ignacio Guerrero, and his son Bautista Guerrero—all survived the incident. The Chilean Navy later recovered Piñera’s body.

President Gabriel Boric, in a televised speech from La Moneda Palace later that night, proclaimed a period of three days for the entire nation to mourn and revealed that a state funeral would be arranged for Piñera, overseen by Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren.

Tatiana Rivera, the regional attorney for Los Rios, confirmed that Piñera’s remains would be transferred to Valdivia for a thorough examination.
