She was born on October 25th, 1956 in Birmingham, England, and grew up in Bombay Maharashtra, India. She is currently married to film director, Mahesh Bhatt. She was born to a British-German mother, Gertrude Hoelzer, and an Indian Kashmiri Pandit’s father, Narendra Nath Razdan.

Soni Razdan began her filming career in English Theatre with John Fowles’ The Collector and her Hindi stage career with Bund Darvaze, Satyadev Debey’s adaptation of Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit
She had the opportunity to be featured in big television shows and also appeared ad Sulochan in the Doordarshan TV series, Buniyaad. Sonia Razdan acted in the Indian TV series Saahil, and Gaatha and has been a regular on Indian television.
She became a director in 2002 when she directed Aur Phir Ek Din on Star Plus. She acted in some Bollywood movies and some projects she directed didn’t see the light.
The first time she shared the screen with her daughter Alia Bhatt was in Razzi where she played a role as Alia’s mother and portrayed the character of a lonely middle-aged government worker and her daughter was the lead role.
