The death of a former football player and member of the Board of Visitors at The Citadel was reported on Wednesday. According to the school’s website, Stanley Myers, a member of the class of 1998, passed away on Wednesday morning.
His age and the reason for his death were not given. According to the website of his law practice, Myers is a Judge Advocate General and was a partner in the Moore Bradley Myers in West Columbia.
Myers joined the board in 2014 after receiving a political science degree from the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. The school reported that he won reelection for a second term in 2020.
According to his biography, the Swansea native played quarterback for the Bulldogs and wore the number 16 while starting 43 of 44 games. According to the website, he is the only player in Citadel history to have ever thrown for more than 3,000 yards and run for more than 2,000 yards.
Final plans weren’t immediately known, unfortunately. Myers was a partner in the Lexington County law office of Moore Bradley Myers. He also held the position of military judge as a lieutenant colonel in the South Carolina Army National Guard.
In South Carolina, he was the first-ever African-American to hold the position of military judge for the National Guard.
Myers was commissioned as an Infantry Officer out of the Citadel. He deployed as a captain to Afghanistan from 2007-2008 with the 218th Infantry Brigade to support Operation Enduring Freedom.
Myers then became a Judge Advocate General in the military, working as trial counsel, defence counsel, and finally as a judge.
On being the first Black military judge for the Guard in South Carolina, Myers told News19 that being “the first” held a lot of weight and responsibility. “My goal is to make sure to stay the course, that I do the best job that I can so that I can give other individuals an opportunity to come in,” Myers said. “I want to make sure that I properly pass the baton.”
He was also a South Carolina Super Lawyer, a Midlands Legal Elite, a member of the American Bar of Trial Attorneys, and was licensed to practice in state and federal courts.
