Assembly Members in the Cape Coast Metropolis have returned money allegedly given to them by Cape Coast Mayor Ernest Arthur, who was rejected.

The Assembly Members stated that they are not in the Metropolitan Assembly to accept bribes to confirm the mayor because it is against the law.

They claim that people, including the Oguaa Traditional Council, are pointing fingers at them for accepting money while voting against the Mayor.

They stated that they intend to protect the Cape Coast Metropolis’ integrity.

Usman Abban, the group’s leader, told Starr News that the money was returned for future reference, as well as to avoid election violence and insecurity in the area.

He stated that Arthur’s behaviour toward the people of Cape Coast Metropolis was not what they desired.

The nominee has been rejected by assembly members for the second time.

Cape Coast: Regional Minister kneels to beg assembly members to accept Mayor-nominee [Video]

With a heavy heart and teary eyes, Central Regional Minister, Justina Marigold Assan on Wednesday, went on her knees to feverishly beg and appeal to assembly members of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Area to accept Mayor-nominee, Ernest Arthur.

Mr Arthur served in President Akufo-first Addo’s term and was re-elected to a second term.

He has been praised for the numerous development projects that have occurred in the area, and Madam Assan is confident that his confirmation will be a step in the right direction.

To secure a two-thirds majority, the nominee needed 44 ‘Yes’ votes.

However, it appears that the assembly members were not sufficiently convinced by the regional minister’s actions, as they voted against him.

After several hours of delay, he received 40 ‘YES’ votes and 25 ‘NO’ votes out of a total of 65 votes cast, which was insufficient to qualify him.

Attempts by the Presiding Member to obtain a second vote were futile, as some NDC members held a press conference to demand proof of President Akufo-Addo’s re-nomination.

The Assembly will vote again, however, because Ernest Arthur has been re-nominated by the President.
