Baba Yaga is a popular witch of the East in Russia. She is recorded to scare children across Eastern Europe for so many centuries. According to sources, the name Baba Yaga has two elements; Baba which means Grandmother or old woman in most Slavic languages.

Additionally, there are two versions of the origin of the name Baba Yaga. Yaga is seen to be a lilliputian feminine name, Jadwiga, a Slavicized version of Germanic Hedwig. Also, another version says that the name Baba Yaga originates from the old Russian verb ‘yagat’ which means to find fault or abuse.

Baba Yaga is a supernatural being(spiritual being) who is recorded to appear as a ferocious-looking, wretched, unkept and contentious old woman in Slavic folklore. She is believed to fly around in a mortar.

Baba Yaga Residence

The famous Baba Yaga is reported to live on the edge of the forest in a wooden hut but her building is not like what you have seen before. Her building is said to stand on a pair of gigantic chicken legs. According to many, the structure usually has no door or a window.

Also, the house’s door is not sighted unless one says its magical phrase; Turn your back to the forest, your front to me. Additionally, the fence fencing her is made of the bones of humans with skulls on top mostly one pole lacking its skull leaving space for Yaga’s next victim.

Who Is Baba Yaga?

She is a very contentious and complex character. She is not actually a good person but isn’t entirely evil as well. In most cases, she needs a special and careful approach. According to most Slavic folk tales, Baba Yaga acted as an antagonist. Stories have been told about her that, she sometimes catches children and threatens to eat them alive.

In some stories, she provided misleading and deceptive information (intel) to strangers who loses their way into the deep forest where she lived. In some mythological folk tales, the witch of Russia is known to have given guidance to lost souls and helped others through their quests.

According to mythologists, Yaga ages one year anytime anyone asks her a question which very well explains her unwillingness to help people.

Baba Yaga Appearance

Baba Yaga is given the appearance of an ugly, unkept and scary old woman. She is widely represented as an ugly, little old woman with big distorted long teeth and a nose. She lived far from people. Her hut isn’t also modern. She has been who she is for unnumbered years and centuries as nobody knows her age.

Many believe that, the witch knows something most women are desperately trying to learn and know; the spirit and knowledge of transforming from an old woman into a young one within a blink of an eye.

According to sources, the old witch knows exactly what type of potion helps her whenever she wanted to be young. She has always used this skill to deceive and misguide strangers. It is also believed that, the witch has only one leg.

The witch has inspired the shooting and releasing of many Russian films and cartoons as well. The movie Vasilissa Prekrasnaya (The Beautiful) by Aleksandr Rou, which featured the witch, Baba Yaga, was the first feature with fantasy elements in the Soviet Union.
