Tim McCarver Biography
Tim McCarver was born in Memphis, Tennessee on October 16, 1941. At the young age of 17, he was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as a catcher and made his Major League debut in 1959. Over the course of his career, he played for several teams including the Cardinals, Phillies, Expos, and Red Sox. During his time as a player, he was a two-time All-Star and won two World Series championships with the Cardinals in 1964 and 1967.
After retiring from playing in 1980, McCarver entered the field of broadcasting. He started as a colour commentator for the Philadelphia Phillies and then worked for ABC, CBS, and Fox. He was the lead analyst for Fox’s coverage of the World Series for 19 seasons, from 1996 to 2014. In addition to his work with Fox, McCarver worked as a broadcaster for the New York Mets from 1983 to 1998 and for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2014 to 2018.
Throughout his broadcasting career, McCarver was known for his ability to explain complex baseball plays and strategies in a way that was easily understandable for viewers. He was also known for his catchphrases, such as “excuse me” and “I’ll tell you what.” McCarver’s passion for the game was infectious, and he was widely regarded as one of the best analysts in the business.
McCarver had a number of notable moments during his broadcasting career, including calling the infamous “Bartman Game” in the 2003 National League Championship Series. He also provided analysis for several iconic World Series moments, including Kirk Gibson’s walk-off home run in 1988, Joe Carter’s series-winning home run in 1993, and David Freese’s game-winning home run in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series.
In recognition of his broadcasting excellence, McCarver was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012 as a recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award. He also won four Sports Emmy Awards for his work as a baseball analyst.
Outside of broadcasting, McCarver was involved in various charitable organizations. He founded the Tim McCarver Foundation in 1998, which provides financial support for educational and athletic opportunities for underprivileged children.
