The President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo is expected to make a crucial announcement today on whether to review the imposition of restrictions in the country or to maintain the status quo even as reported cases of COVID 19 continues to reach alarming heights.
There has been an alarming increase in reported cases of COVID 19 with its associated deaths due to the lapsing of restrictions by the president and non-adherence to COVID-19 protocols by the citizenry.
And with the mass opening of schools at all levels, there are fears the worse is yet to happen as the virus continuing to hit almost every part of the country.
The President today has three options: strict enforcement of COVID 19 protocols, a Partial Lockdown, or a ban on Social gathering.
The General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Justice Yankson has threatened his group will embark on a strike should government fail to impose restrictions on social gatherings as the surge in active cases persist.
In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, Dr. Yankson revealed that already health facilities are on their knees.
‘The issue is very simple and we can only advise, and we can only advocate. The worst-case scenario is that we put our tools down. But that might not be the solution for this pandemic because we don’t control the executive power.’ He added
“Mind you we are the first government advisors and we do our best to interact with them collectively as a group but the ultimate sanctioning of a particular activity has to come from the President”.
Already the association has issued a statement calling the government to place a ban on church services, funerals, and other social gatherings.
The country is experiencing an average of 600 persons tested positive for the virus daily.
