Transports fares to go up again; as gov’t fails to remove petroleum taxes – GPRTU

The GPRTU and the Concerned Drivers Association are upset with the NPP administration.

The new development comes after President Nana Akufo-Addo flatly rejected the unions’ call for the government to abolish fuel tariffs.

The Transport and Driver unions believe that eliminating fuel taxes would help Ghanaians cope with the present high cost of living.

But Akufo-Addo claims the levies would save the country $4 billion. The unions say the government’s stance forces them to raise transit rates.

Mr. Amoah told JoyNews that the administration had misled them.

“They [government] kept delaying and lying to us. We don’t believe we need to pursue it anymore now that they’ve said they can’t do it.

“We have done all we can to have it scrapped or taxed less. But we don’t believe it’s possible to reschedule that meeting, and then we’ll all agree on the [%] of the transportation fee increase,” he added on Wednesday.
