Two Ghanaian E-Agriculture Startups Emerge Winners at Regional Awards in Ivory Coast

25 Agritech entrepreneurs from across West Africa, on 7th September, conveyed at the 7th African Green Revolution forum in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, to present their businesses to an international jury of industry experts, entrepreneurs and investors.

The event was the final stage of the Technical Center for Agricultural and Rural Co-operation (CTA);  Pitch Agrihack out of which 3 Ghaianan startups were selected from 130 e-agriculture startups from 11 West African countries.

With two categories (Emerging and Advanced), and a rigorous/technical 6-process pitch criteria, Ghana represented by Farmart – a Ghanaian online farmer’s market and Agrocenta – an online marketplace for agricultural produce emerged winners in their various divisions.

For their ultimate prize, the businesses were awarded rewarded grants of €5,000 and €12,500 respectively

Other winners on the day included:

Efarms – a Nigerian-based online networking platform (  €7,500)

Bayseddo – a Senegalese agri-financing platform ( €15,000)

Special prizes were also given by CTA’s partner, Mali-based Suguba, which offered two prizes of €2,000 each to Malick Birane, representing Aywajieune from Senegal and Ehui Guy Sausthène, representing ICT4Dev from Cote d’Ivoire.

Dr Agnes Kalibata, president of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) was present during the ceremony and handed out the prizes.

All winners including the 25 finalists have the opportunity to network with potential partners at upcoming international and regional events to further help them scale their agribusinesses as well as benefit from the exposure achieved by presenting at the AGRF, with guidance from business books which they received at the final

CTA hopes that these start-ups will continue to grow into successful businesses that harness the potential of ICTs to facilitate access to timely and accurate information for improved agricultural production.

Pitch AgriHack! is a component of the AgriHack Talent program of the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP-EU (CTA). It involves:

  • training sessions that will strengthen the capacity of the young entrepreneurs
  • a pitching competition for participating start-ups and entrepreneurs
  • opportunities to consolidate, pilot or upscale their platforms and services through grants or additional incubation or acceleration
