A Punjabi Hindu household raised Virat Kohli, born on 5 November 1988 in Delhi. His mother, Saroj Kohli, worked as a housekeeper, and his father, Prem Kohli, practised law. Vikas, his elder brother, and Bhawna, his older sister, are his siblings.
The early years of Kohli’s life were spent in Uttam Nagar, where he started schooling at Vishal Bharti Public School. According to his relatives, Kohli showed an early interest in cricket at just three. He would take up the bat in a game of cricket, show off his innate talent, and ask his father to bowl to him.
The West Delhi Cricket Academy (WCDA) was founded in 1998, and on May 30 of that year, Prem Kohli espoused his younger son’s passion for cricket, supported the nine-year-old Kohli’s goals, and set up a meeting for him with Rajkumar Sharma, who at first thought of him as just another enthusiastic and driven young boy. However, Sharma was amazed by Kohli’s accuracy and throwing power two weeks later.
