What Is Alopecia?

Alopecia is the loss of hair from the body. The United States Department of Health and Human Services explains that the alopecia areata is a condition that happens when the immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair loss.

Delhi-based Dr. Suruchi Puri explains, “Alopecia means hair loss. It can be of various types. The commonest cause of alopecia is mostly genetic. If you follow an unhealthy lifestyle, that could also be a reason. It is also hormonal.”

There are majorly 5 types of alopecia.

  • Alopecia areata: It is an auto-immune disorder that leads to bald patches on the scalp.
  • Androgenic alopecia: This is a common condition among men and women. This kind of alopecia leads to receding hairline and hair thinning.
  • Alopecia totalis: This type of alopecia refers to the complete loss of hair on your scalp.
  • Scarring alopecia: inflammation destroys hair follicles in this stage of alopecia. The follicles get replaced by scar tissue, eventually leading to hair loss in that area.
  • Traction alopecia: This kind of alopecia is caused by putting stress on hair with constant stretching or pulling.

Alopecia treatment

Though some researchers claim that there is no treatment for Alopecia, others reveal that the treatment for Alopecia areata is determined by several factors including nutrition deficiencies.

Dr. Suruchi explains that the “Nutritional deficiencies like that of Vitamin D, iron, zinc, etc need to be corrected. Then, the patient is also tested for other health issues like thyroid and diabetes. In the case of Alopecia areata, the patients are given injections to promote hair growth”.

Giving further explanation, she said, “One of the most effective treatments for alopecia, however, is advanced Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). It works for all kinds of alopecia. This process needs to be done properly. Since it is a non-standardized procedure, the results vary from one clinic to another.”
