What Happened to Carl-Hens Beliard?
Early on Wednesday morning, Carl-Hens Beliard, an 18-year-old Salem State University freshman basketball player, was shot and killed close to school.
The incident on Forest Avenue occurred just before 1:30 a.m., according to Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker. Beliard was discovered in a car parked on the sidewalk, suffering from gunshot wounds.
There was a visible bullet hole in a window. After being taken to Salem Hospital, Beliard passed away.
According to Tucker, the Salem State community is not in danger, and the shooting does not seem to be random.
“As both the Salem State president and a college dad, this tragedy is heartbreaking for all in our community and every parent’s worst nightmare,” Salem State President John Keenan said in a statement.
“On behalf of the City of Salem, our hearts go out to the Beliard family and to the Salem State University community,” Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo said in a statement.
In a Facebook comment, Worcester Mayor Joe Petty expressed his sympathies as well, writing, “Carl was a hardworking, kind individual whose life was taken too soon.”

Beliard was a member of Worcester North High School’s state-champion squad and had recently graduated from the school earlier this year.
“This is a devastating loss to our community,” Principal Dr. Sam FanFan said in an email to the school. “Our deepest thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of our former student, who are processing this unthinkable loss.”
“Carl was an accomplished athlete whose life ended just as it was just beginning,” said Worcester Superintendent Rachel Monárrez. “I cannot imagine the pain of the student’s family.”
