“Imago Dei,” which translates to “image of God,” in English is a term from the Latin translation of the Bible. The metaphysical term, Imago Dei is linked with humans only. It denotes the spiritual affinity between God and humanity is known as the “image of God.” Genesis 1:27, which states that “God made man in his own image,” is where the expression first appeared.

This biblical verse does not suggest that God is a person, but rather that people are made in God’s likeness in terms of their moral, spiritual, and intellectual nature.

Therefore, in their capacity to manifest the distinctive qualities with which they have been blessed upon, humans pictutes God’s divine nature. Humans are distinct from all other creatures due to their capacity for self-actualization, logical understanding, creative freedom, and self-transcendence.

The Significance Of Imago Dei 

The significance of humans being made “in God’s image” is our sole duty to acknowledge and comprehend reason as well as our capacity to construct abstract ideas from the world we live in. This gives us the power to either build a serene world or a chaotic one that has fallen, depending on our intentions and knowledge.

We are capable of departing from God and experiencing the consequences, just as Satan did when he disobeyed God. To build wealthy and helpful societies, we must recognize our capacity for good and evil and behave in accordance with God’s will and law.

 

Imago Dei In The Bible 

Almighty God said in Genesis 1:26-27 “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God made man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

“And have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” (Colossians 3:10)

“Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.” (Genesis 9:6)
