Spongebob Squarepants fans are advising others to Google “what race is Spongebob” because the results are confusing.
SpongeBob, who was reportedly born in July 1986, made his on-screen debut in Help Wanted, the first episode of the program, back in 1999.
The protagonist, Spongebob, is a sea sponge. Other characters include Patrick the starfish and Squidward the squid.
According to The Sun, the theme song for the program makes eight mentions of SpongeBob SquarePants in all, which is impressive given how short the song is.
A Medium post that ranks as the top search on Google analyzes the “ethnic identities” of the show’s characters.
What race is SpongeBob
Spongebob obviously lacks a race because he is both an inanimate object and a cartoon character.
The popular cartoon character is nonetheless described as “a light-skinned black character who may be able to pass as white in some scenarios” in an article by Medium.
The characters in the show are Polynesian, according to a SpongeBob Fandom website, because Bikini Bottom is located beneath Bikini Atoll. Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands is home to a coral reef. Ezer claims that Spongebob is black, in contrast to Patrick who is white and Plankton the bad guy who is from Latin America.
The author continues by saying that Spongebob almost perfectly fulfills the “first condition for a black cartoon character.”
Squidward, from Spongebob Squarepants, is allegedly Jewish and “ran away from his segregated town to live in Bikini Bottom and make it as an artist,” according to the same report.
