Billy Packer Biography and Career Summary

Billy Packer, born on February 25, 1940, in Wellsville, New York, comes from an athletic family. His father, Tony Packer, was a star athlete in football, basketball, and baseball at St. Lawrence University and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1982. Tony also served as the head coach for Lehigh University’s men’s basketball team.

Billy attended Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and later graduated from Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. During his time at Forest, he played as a guard on the school’s basketball team for three years and later became an assistant coach for his alma mater.

In 1972, Billy began a career in broadcasting, starting as a fill-in colour analyst for a regionally televised ACC game in Raleigh, North Carolina. The following season, he became a regular analyst. Over the course of his career, he worked at the network level for both NBC (1974-1981) and CBS (1981-2008), covering every NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship and the Final Four from 1975 to 2008.

In addition to his broadcasting career, Billy also helped create the computer game Hoops. He received multiple awards throughout his career, including the Sports Emmy Award in 1993 and the Marvin Francis Award for “notable achievement and service in coverage of the ACC” in 2005.

Billy covered the NCAA tournament as a TV analyst for over 35 years before being replaced by Clark Kellogg on CBS’s lead broadcast crew on July 15, 2008.
