Charlie Thomas was born on April 7, 1937, in Lynchburg, Virginia, in the United States of America. His father was Charles “Happy” Thomas Jr. and grandfather of hip-hop producer Charlie “Bambu” Thomas.
Thomas was performing with The Five Crowns at the Apollo Theater in 1958 when George Treadwell fired his group, called The Drifters. Treadwell went on to recruit The Five Crowns to be the new “Drifters” afterwards.
In 1988, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Drifters and was given a Pioneer Award by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1999. On 21 May 2011, Charlie Thomas performed with the Drifters in Cranston, Rhode Island at the Vintage New England Theater.
Thomas died from liver cancer on January 31, 2023, at the age of 85. He died at his home in Bowie, Maryland.
