Born on August 6, 1963, in Van Nuys, California, Mitnick’s journey began with unauthorized access to computer networks but ended with him becoming a respected security consultant, public speaker, and author. His story is a fascinating blend of brilliance, controversy, and redemption.

At the age of 16, in 1979, Mitnick gained his first taste of unauthorized access when a friend provided him with the phone number for the Ark, the computer system used by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). He successfully broke into DEC’s network and copied the company’s software, a crime that led to his conviction in 1988, resulting in 12 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

However, Mitnick’s thirst for hacking knowledge did not wane. During his supervised release, he hacked into Pacific Bell’s voicemail computers, leading to a warrant for his arrest. Faced with imminent capture, Mitnick chose to flee and became a fugitive for two-and-a-half years. The U.S. Department of Justice would later state that during this period, Mitnick gained unauthorized access to numerous computer networks, utilizing cloned cellular phones to conceal his location and stealing valuable proprietary software from major companies.

The FBI finally apprehended Mitnick on February 15, 1995, after a well-publicized pursuit. Found with cloned cellular phones, false identification, and more than 100 cloned cellular phone codes, Mitnick faced serious charges, including wire fraud, possession of unauthorized access devices, interception of wire or electronic communications, unauthorized access to a federal computer, and causing damage to a computer.

Throughout his legal battles, Mitnick’s diagnosis of Asperger syndrome became a point of discussion, though it was not used as evidence during his trial. Eventually, he pleaded guilty to multiple charges in 1999, resulting in a sentence of 46 months in prison and an additional 22 months for violating the terms of his previous supervised release.

Mitnick’s time behind bars was riddled with controversy. Law enforcement officials allegedly exaggerated his abilities, leading to him spending four-and-a-half years in pre-trial custody and eight months in solitary confinement. Reports also surfaced regarding the lack of kosher meals at the prison where he was held, sparking further debate.

He sought rehabilitation and proved himself worthy of holding a federally-issued amateur radio license in 2001.
