Antwun Echols was an American boxer who was a world middleweight contender throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. His hometown was Davenport, Iowa.
In 1999, Echols challenged Bernard Hopkins, the IBF middleweight champion, after turning professional in 1993. Echols fought Hopkins hard, but Hopkins prevailed by decision. He lost to Hopkins again the following year, this time by way of a 10th-round TKO.
He engaged in a thrilling fight with Charles Brewer in 2001. Echols was knocked out three times in the second round, but he got up in the third to win by TKO and claim the vacant NABA super middleweight title. After Sven Ottke was given ‘Super’ champion status in 2003, the WBA Super Middleweight Title was given to Echols again.
He competed against Anthony Mundine for the vacant title but was defeated by a slim margin. In 2005, Kingsley Ikeke defeated Echols in the tenth round of an IBF Middleweight Eliminator. Echols’ career as a boxer of championship calibre has long since finished as he is 1-16-3 since 2005.
Derrick Findley stopped Echols in the third round of his most recent fight, which took place in October 2015; this was the seventh straight fight in which Echols has been stopped in the third round.
Echols was shot in the leg on July 30, 2007, in Davenport, Iowa, while attempting to break up a fight. When he was questioned about his family size in 2013, he said, “Twenty-three, I think,” while acknowledging there may be more. He was then residing in Dade City, Florida, with his fiancée and their four kids.
