Since 2023, John Karl Fetterman has served as the junior United States Senator from Pennsylvania. He was a Democrat and the mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, from 2006 to 2019. He was also the 34th lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania from 2019 to 2023.
Fetterman was born in Reading Hospital in West Reading, Pennsylvania, to Karl and Susan Fetterman.
His parents were both 19 years old when he was born.
Later, they moved to York, Pennsylvania, where Fetterman spent his formative years and his father was elevated to the position of partner at an insurance company.
John Fetterman grew up in an affluent York suburb with ardent Republicans for parents.
Fetterman, who acknowledged having a privileged childhood, claimed to have “sleepwalked” as a young adult while playing four years of college football with the goal of someday taking over his father’s company.
Fetterman earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Albright College, which was also his father’s alma mater, in 1991. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) was also awarded to him by the University of Connecticut in 1993.
For two years, Fetterman underwrote risk management for Chubb in Pittsburgh.
