Who Was John Motson?
John Motson, born on 10 July 1945 in Salford, Lancashire, England, was the son of a Methodist minister who followed Boston United as a child. He received his education at Culford School and De La Salle Grammar School in Salford before studying history at the University of Sussex. Motson began his career as a newspaper reporter in Chipping Barnet after completing his degree. In 1967 and 1968, he covered football for the Sheffield Morning Telegraph.
Motson started his broadcasting career in the early 1970s as a football commentator for the BBC. His first major assignment was the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, where he provided live commentary on some of the tournament’s most memorable matches. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he continued to cover international tournaments for the BBC, including the European Championships and several World Cups.
However, Motson’s greatest contribution to football commentary may be his work covering the English Premier League. In 1979, he began commentating on matches in the top tier of English football and continued until his retirement in 2018, covering over 2,000 matches, including many of the most iconic moments in Premier League history.
Motson’s commentary style was unique and immediately recognizable. He had a rapid-fire delivery, an encyclopedic knowledge of football trivia, and a love of obscure statistics that made him a favourite among fans and colleagues alike. He was particularly known for his ability to quickly identify players and provide detailed background information on them, even when they were relatively unknown.
Additionally, Motson was famous for his love of puns and wordplay, and his commentary was often peppered with clever and humorous turns of phrase. During the 1990 FA Cup final between Manchester United and Crystal Palace, he famously described the match as “going from Dan to Beardsley,” a play on the phrase “from Dan to Beersheba,” which appears in the Bible.
Throughout his career, Motson’s contributions to football commentary were recognized with numerous awards and accolades. He received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to sports broadcasting in 2001 and was inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame in 2018.
