Gene Wilder is the stepfather of Katharine Wilder.  His birth name is Jerome Silberman, and better known as Gene Wilder. 

He was an actor, screenwriter, director, producer, singer, and author, best known for his role as Willy Wonka in “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” shot in 1971.

Gene Wilder was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA on 11 June 1933 – his birth sign was Gemini and he held American nationality.

Gene Wilder was raised in Milwaukee by his father William J. Silberman who was a manufacturer and salesman of novelty items, and his mother Jeanne Baer who was a housewife. 

Gene Wilder’s mother suffered from rheumatic fever and the doctor told Gene to try to do whatever to make her laugh, and after Gene saw his older sister perform on stage, he asked her teacher if he could teach him acting as well. 

He began studying acting at the age of 13, but after two years, his mother sent him to a military institute in Hollywood, but due to his Jewish background, Gene was bullied and sexually assaulted there.

He returned home and started acting in plays, such as a production of “Romeo and “Juliet” in which he played Balthasar. 

Gene Wilder matriculated from Washington High School in 1951 and graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in communication and theatre arts in 1955. 

He joined the Army on 10 September 1956 and was assigned to the medical corps in Fort Sam Houston. His mother died from ovarian cancer in November 1957; Gene was discharged from the army in the summer of 1958.

He launched his career with roles in plays, while his most significant came in 1963 when he won the lead role in the “Mother Courage and Her Children” production.

In 1969 he moved to live in Paris, France and starred in the “Start the Revolution Without Me” comedy film set during the French Revolution. 

In 1972, Woody Allen invited Gene to appear in his “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask)” sex comedy film which became a hit, and helped Gene gain recognition. He directed his first movie – “Young Frankenstein” – in 1974, which turned out to be a major success, while his second film “The World’s Greatest Lover” released in 1977 was a critical failure.

He then married Katharine’s mother Mary Joan Shutz on 27 October 1967 but divorced her in 1974. 

He again married Gilda Radner, an actress, on 14 September 1984 and she died on 20 May 1989 from ovarian cancer complications. 

He then married Karen Webb, a clinical supervisor, on 9 September 1991, and they were together until his death.

Gene died on 29 August 2016 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
