The mother of Katlego Bereng, Monica Matsie, cried bitterly during the funeral service for her son on Thursday in Bloemfontein. Many other people who attended the funeral for the football player whom police believe was the dummy body used in Thabo Bester’s escape from Mangaung prison on May 3, 2022, also did.
The Bloemfontein Celtics soccer team’s supporters’ group, Siwelele sa Masele, organized the memorial service for Katlego Bereng. Mahube Tumelo in Hamilton Industrial was the venue for the service Bereng’s mother was escorted into the hall by family members as the supporters’ club sang in the background.
About a week ago, Matsie went to the government mortuary to examine her son’s remains when she suddenly became ill and had to be taken to the hospital. Later that week, while visiting family, she was admitted to the hospital once more.
When Celtic supporters spoke, they praised Bereng for being one of them and for working hard to plan club events, outings to soccer matches, and the recruitment of new fans.
National chairman of Siwelele sa Masele Pule Mabena praised Bereng as a devoted follower who always inspired other fans to wear the Celtic colors of green and white.
Katlego Bereng was praised so much by Siwelele sa Masele’s national chairman Pule Mabena. He described the deceased as one of the die-hard fans who are fond of inspiring other supporters to put on green and white known to be the colors of the Celtic football club.
He said Bereng was the deputy chairperson of the Kopanong Branch “He was the youngest in his branch executive for more than four years, he was a dedicated member and full of respect for everyone”.
