Ted Dibiase Biography
DiBiase was born on January 18, 1954, in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S. He was the biological son of wrestler Helen Nevins and Ted Wills, an entertainer and singer. DiBiase was later adopted by wrestler “Iron” Mike DiBiase, who married his mother when he was just four years old. Tragically, DiBiase’s adoptive father passed away from a heart attack in the ring when DiBiase was only 15 years old.
This traumatic event had a significant impact on DiBiase and his family. His mother struggled with depression and alcoholism, and he was eventually sent to live with his grandparents in Willcox, Arizona. Despite the challenges he faced, DiBiase excelled in sports and attended West Texas State University on a football scholarship. However, an injury in his senior year led him to drop out of college and pursue a career in professional wrestling.
DiBiase was trained by Dory Funk, Jr. and Terry Funk and made his professional wrestling debut as a referee in June 1974 in the Amarillo territory owned by the Funks. He then went to the Mid-South territory of Bill Watts, where he wrestled for four years. Despite losing his first match against Danny Hodge, DiBiase quickly made a name for himself in the industry. By February 1978, he had unseated Dick Slater to become the Missouri State champion, only to lose to Dick Murdoch a few weeks later on television.
DiBiase continued to wrestle in various territories throughout the 1980s, including a stint in All Japan Pro Wrestling, where he won the NWA United National Championship. Tragically, his mother passed away just two months later.
In 1985, DiBiase formed a tag team with fellow wrestler Stan Hansen, and the two became the PWF Tag Team Champions. Later that year, they won the World’s Strongest Tag Determination League. DiBiase eventually returned to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), where he worked as a commentator and manager. He also purchased the contracts of many wrestlers for his Million Dollar Corporation stable, including I.R.S., Bam Bam Bigelow, and King Kong Bundy.
In 1996, DiBiase joined the New World Order (nWo) in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and served as the group’s spokesperson for three months. He later worked as a creative consultant and road agent for WWE’s SmackDown! brand.
Today, DiBiase is a Christian minister who founded the Heart of David Ministry in 1999. He travels the world ministering to churches, camps, and conferences, including Promise Keepers and Youth of the Nation. He is also the author of “Every Man Has His Price,” a part-autobiography and part-Christian testimony.
However, DiBiase has also faced controversy. In 2020, his ministry received more than $2.1 million in welfare funds from the state of Mississippi after his son, Brett, was hired as deputy administrator of the state’s Department of Human Services.
Brett pleaded guilty to creating fraudulent statements in what has been labelled as Mississippi’s largest public embezzlement case in state history. In October 2021, a court ordered Ted DiBiase, Sr. to pay $722,299 of the misappropriated funds given to his Heart of David Ministries. The Mississippi Department of Human Services also sued DiBiase in May 2022.
